At 491ft above sea level, the view from the top is an exceptional one across the valley to the main ridge of the Downs traversed earlier in the walk. If you have a wait for the train I wholeheartedly recommend crossing the railway line and a stop atthe YHA- they serve lovely cakes, have clean toilets and you can sit outside in their pretty garden with nice views on a sunny day. Continue south along the road, cross a busy road, and continue south on a lane for 30 metres. Now you go up. But I will still tell you (and show you) everything you will see. The trail sign will point ahead and to the left. When you arrive at it you can either cross it to get to the station or you can turn right so go and have a peek at the gorgeous Southease village with it's thatched cottages and cute church. This path is not marked as a right of way on OS maps but is within a large area of open access land. If tired, you can omit this last section and still enjoy a 17.4km (10.8 mile walk).. Clockwise (directions on pages 6-9 of the pdf) leaves the longest section, Lewes to Southease, till last, and you face a long slow climb up to the highest point on the walk as part of this. It's a perfect destination for a day out or as a base from which to explore the Lewes district. Southease is an excellent place to start walking or cycling the South Downs Way. Walking in the South Downs, having views of the rolling hills is not unusual. You will next be walking in a field, with a gorgeous view to the left. For part of the way, there is a path on the bank to the left of the road which offers a magnificent view over Lewes. And no walk is better than a walk with a pub at the end, especially as people drown their sorrows after failing their new year's resolution already. A tea in the beautiful garden is just the ticket.
